While many Burleson family members inherit family research materials from family members who gathered and researched in earlier decades, BFA encourages today's members to use that information only as a starting point for research. I can’t believe another year has passed and we have almost completed the first quarter of this century. I want each of you to experience peace, health, and goodwill for everyone in the future. The Burleson Family Association has been a big part of my life for almost half a century, and looking back on that journey, I realize just how much I have benefited from being a member all those years. When I became member number 256 in 1982, my interest was derived from my mother, Erma Burleson Carmack. She was a superwoman in every way, and I firmly believe that her Burleson heritage played a significant role in her character. The more I learned about my family's hardships as they migrated to Oklahoma, the more I wanted to know. I am sure you have similar feelings about your Burleson heritage and BFA would be happy to accept your stories and comments about your families. We can still share so much with the “new kids on the block”! When I first began researching, it generally entailed driving more than 100 miles to the Oklahoma Historical Library in Oklahoma City just to read census records, a fundamental necessity for any genealogist. No wonder it took so many years to piece together information on my family. The BFA was the beacon that helped us learn more about the Burlesons. We waited anxiously for each bulletin to arrive and poured over them from cover to cover. Every bit of information we found between the covers of the genealogical books at our library helped, and I was often found lurking there, even during my lunch hours, always searching for something in the indexes that started with the letter B. Fast forward a bit more, and you would have found me driving to Arkansas and Missouri to stand at the gravestones of unknown relatives who haunted the local courthouses. I look back at those times with fondness, while at the same time, I am so thankful for the digital age that has been born in the last two decades. Now, instead of spending money on food, gasoline, motels, letters to courthouses, payments to copy machines, etc. I happily subscribe to Ancestry, My Heritage, Gedmatch.com, DNA Painter, and other research applications. Dressed in my robe and gown, I can travel the paths of my ancestors right from the comfort of my own home! We would love to hear from you if you would share your research memories. Blessings, Paula DensonBURLESON FAMILY BULLETIN 4163 “Fall in with the Family” Burleson Family Association Reunion 2024 On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Burleson friends and family began gathering in Tyler, Texas to celebrate another reunion. This time honored tradition of having an annual reunion began the year the Association was founded, 1981. However, beginning now, the reunion will be held biannually. Look for the next reunion in the Spring of 2026. Participants took the opportunity to explore this lovely piney woods area of Texas; visiting Lindale, Tyler and the Salem Cemetery in Alba. The Salem Cemetery contains graves of many Burlesons and their extended family members. A prominent tombstone from Woodmen of the World was that of John Joseph Burleson and was really in need of cleaning. Several people worked to do just that! BURLESON FAMILY BULLETIN 4164 On Friday, the activities continued with a field trip to the Smith County Historical Society Museum in Tyler. Everyone enjoyed a nice luncheon at the Potpourri Restaurant and a visit to the beautiful Tyler Rose Gardens and Museum completed the afternoon. The museum is housed in the front rooms of the historic 1904 Carnegie Library building. The exhibits showthe history of Smith County, Texas, where several Burleson families have made their homes.BURLESON FAMILY BULLETIN 4165 World famous Tyler RoseGarden - Largest rose garden in the nation The last day of the Reunion, Saturday, was packed with many things to do from breakfast to dinner ! We had auctions, we heard speakers, played games, ate terrific snacks and meals, and had wonderful conversations with family and friends! Speaker highlights were Justice Ken Wise, Texas judge, historian and President of Texas State Historical Association and Gary L. Pinkerton, author and historian. Paula Denson, BFA President, gave a talk titled “Who is Rachel Hendricks?” Rachel was the wife of the first known Aaron Burleson in North Carolina. Her maiden name has been the subject of much research. The evening ended with a slideshow of photos taken during the Burleson’s trip to the United Kingdom and Ireland in April 2024. Judge Wise prepared a video presentation especially for BFA, “Texas Rangers and the Burleson Connection”. Catch Judge Wise on his podcast, “Wise About Texas”. You’ll really enjoy it. Gary Pinkerton is the author of TRAMMEL’S TRACE. Pinkerton is an interesting speaker and gave a nice summary of the life of Nicholas Trammel and facts about the trace (road) he carved out of the wilderness from Arkansas through East Texas to Nacogdoches. The trace was used for smuggling and criminal activity for many years and added to the colorful history of East Texas.
