This document presents a comprehensive study on the knowledge and awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) among dental students, utilizing a questionnaire survey approach. Our research involved a diverse group of 400 dental undergraduates, meticulously analyzed to understand their perceptions and readiness regarding the integration of AI in future dental practices.
The study employed a cross-sectional questionnaire, a robust method to gather insights into demographics, attitudes, and awareness of AI and ML. Key findings revealed that a significant percentage of students, specifically 67%, had heard of AI, with 35% being familiar with ML. Clinical students demonstrated notably higher knowledge compared to preclinical students, with a p-value of less than 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference. Despite this, 55% of the students expressed concerns about AI replacing human dentists, highlighting a common apprehension within the field. However, 40% of the students felt confident in utilizing AI without additional training, underscoring a potential for greater adoption with appropriate educational interventions.
Our findings advocate for enhanced education concerning AI and ML within dental curricula. We believe that by integrating relevant modules and practical applications, we can better prepare future dental professionals. This proactive approach will help students embrace AI not as a threat, but as a powerful tool to improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and overall patient care. The goal is to cultivate a generation of dentists who are not only aware of AI's potential but also proficient in harnessing its capabilities to advance the field.
