Compiled by Phra Sombat Indasaro (Baramee) Design by Mr. Phumarin Inta Preface The Importance and Benefits of Buddhist Chanting Chanting is one of the important practices for Buddhists in general, especially for monks, novices, laymen, and laywomen. In addition to serving as a traditional oral means of preserving the Buddha’s teachings, chanting enables both the reciters and faithful listeners to learn the meanings of the texts, to understand their doctrinal content, and to reflect deeply upon the teachings of the Buddha. Such reflection gives rise to appreciation, faith, and serene confidence, and brings about joy, inner fulfillment, calmness, and mental clarity. Chanting thus serves as a supportive means for the cultivation of mental development (bhavana), leading to wisdom that realizes the truth correctly in accordance with the True Dhamma. This constitutes a path toward the cessation of suffering. When practiced progressively and properly, chanting is therefore regarded as a great blessing in one’s life. Moreover, chanting brings about numerous benefits, including the following: 1. Dispelling Laziness While chanting, feelings of boredom, sluggishness, drowsiness, and laziness fade away, giving rise to freshness, alertness, and vitality. 2. Reducing Self-Centeredness At that moment, one’s attention is focused on chanting rather than on oneself. As a result, greed, anger, and delusion do not intrude upon the mind. 3. Cultivating Wisdom Chanting with an understanding of the translation and meaning enables the practitioner to gain knowledge and wisdom. 4. Developing Concentration Chanting requires mindfulness and focused attention; otherwise, one may chant incorrectly or lose continuity. When concentration is established, a sense of calmness and mental tranquility naturally arises. 5. Dwelling in the Presence of the Buddha During chanting, the practitioner maintains bodily and verbal discipline (virtue), mental steadiness (concentration), and recollection of the Buddha’s noble qualities (wisdom). In this sense, one is considered to be in the presence of the Buddha through the practice of homage by way of the complete Threefold Training (sila, samadhi, pañña). May those who receive and use this book derive benefit from it and experience the merits described above. They will surely encounter auspiciousness, happiness, and peace of mind in accordance with their individual effort. The compiler also extends heartfelt rejoicing in merit (anumodana) to all benefactors who have sponsored the publication of this chanting book. May all supporters receive the fruits of great generosity, and may they be blessed with longevity, good complexion, happiness, strength, intelligence, and material prosperity at all times, day and night.
