ACH Terminology
ACH (Automated Clearing House): A network that facilitates electronic funds
transfers between banks and financial institutions, enabling direct deposits and
payments. ACH Balanced File: A file where the total debit amount equals the total credit amount. The sum of all transactions in the file matches, ensuring that the total amount being
debited from accounts equals the total amount being credited. The ACH settlement
account is typically receiving the offset amount. ACH Credit: A type of ACH transaction where funds are transferred from the sender’s
account to the recipient’s account, commonly used for direct deposits and payments. ACH Debit: An ACH transaction where the sender pulls funds from the recipient’s
account, often used for bill payments and subscriptions. ACH Network: The system that processes ACH transactions, connecting various
banks and financial institutions to facilitate electronic payments. ACH Operator: the Federal Reserve
ACH Originator: A Community Bank business client that initiates an ACH transaction, as the entity making the payment. The Community Bank business client, as the
originator, has a direct relationship with the receiver. ACH Receiver: The individual or entity that receives the funds in an ACH transaction,
typically the payee or the business receiving payment. ACH Return: An ACH transaction that is rejected or returned to the originator, often
due to insufficient funds, closed accounts, or incorrect account information. ACH Unbalanced File: An ACH file that does not include the off-setting settlement
transaction(s). Batch Processing: The method of processing ACH transactions in groups or batches
rather than individually, which enhances efficiency and reduces costs. Effective Date: The date specified in the ACH file indicates when an ACH transaction
is scheduled to be processed or when the funds are expected to be available in the
recipient's account. Micro-Deposit Verification: A method used to verify an account by sending small
deposits (often less than $1) to the recipient's bank account, which they must confirm
to establish account ownership.5

NACHA (National Automated Clearing House Association): The organization that
governs the ACH network in the U.S., setting rules and standards for ACH
transactions. Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI): The bank that originates the
ACH entry on behalf of the ACH Originator. Payment Processing: The overall procedure of handling ACH transactions, including
initiation, verification, processing, and settlement. Prefund: is a specific payment arrangement in which the originator’s funds are held or
withdrawn in advance of an ACH file or batch being originated or processed. Prefund
minimizes bank exposure and risk. Prenotification (Prenote): A zero-dollar transaction sent to verify the accuracy of the
recipient’s account information before initiating actual payments. Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI): The bank that receives the ACH
entry on behalf of the ACH Receiver. Reversal: A transaction that undoes a previously processed ACH transaction, typically
initiated by the originator to correct an error. Settlement: The process of transferring funds between financial institutions after an
ACH transaction is initiated, usually occurring on the next business day. Settlement Date: The settlement date, in most cases, is the same date as the
effective date. However, based on processing time, the settlement date may occur
after the effective date. Third-Party Payment Processor (TPPP): a business that offers payment processing
services for merchants and other businesses. TPPP act as intermediaries securely
processing payments on behalf of businesses. Third-Party Sender (TPS): also known as a Third-Party Originator, a Third-Party
sender originates ACH entries on behalf of another business through its own financial
institution. The TPS is considered the ACH originator and directly facilitates
transactions and funds pass through the TPS account, unlike a TPPP. Third-Party Service Provider (TPSP): a company other than the Originator, Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI), or Receiving Depository
Financial Institution (RFI) that performs a function of the ACH processing on behalf of
the ODFI or RDFI.6
