Today, we're diving into the critical process of estimation in engineering projects, a fundamental step in ensuring accurate financial planning and resource allocation. Estimation is essentially the process of working out the approximate cost of an engineering project. It meticulously involves the calculation of quantities and costs of various items of work. To prepare these estimates effectively, specific data is required, which falls into three main categories: Drawings, Specifications, and Rate. Drawings provide the visual blueprint, detailing the Plan, Section, Elevation, Location, and Dimensions of the project. Specifications then describe the General nature of the work, its Class, the Quality of work, and the materials to be used. Finally, the Rate category includes the Unit rate of all items, encompassing aspects like man power, materials, and machinery.
The purpose of an estimate is multi-faceted. Firstly, it helps us to find the amount required for the work. Secondly, it allows us to find the cost benefit ratio, an essential metric for project viability. Thirdly, we use it to calculate the different categories of labor involved. Furthermore, an estimate is required for administrative approval, allotment of funds, and technical sanction, making it a pivotal document in the project lifecycle. We also utilize estimates to ascertain the quantity of material for procurement and to estimate the requirement for valuation. These elements collectively highlight why a robust estimation process is indispensable in engineering.
Different types of estimates serve various purposes. We have Preliminary or Approximate or Rough or Abstract Estimates, which are the least accurate but quick to produce. In these estimates, about 5% of the total cost of the project is added in the form of contingencies to account for unforeseen circumstances. This type of estimate is often prepared from practical knowledge and similar work. Then there's the Plinth Area Estimate, where the plinth area cost is calculated based on the total covered area of the building at the floor level. It's important to note that courtyards and other open areas are typically not included in the plinth area. This method is generally 10% to 20% more accurate than the carpet area and is considered the most accurate in the approximate estimate method. Lastly, we use the Cubic Rate Estimate, generally for multi-storied buildings. In this method, the structure cost is approximated as the total cubical contents multiplied by the unit volume. It's more accurate compared to the plinth area estimate as the height of the building is also factored in. We also consider the Unit Rate Estimate, which involves choosing a standard unit of accommodation and multiplying it by an approximate cost per unit. This process typically involves multiplying the approximate number of units by the unit rate.
