Description:

Welcome! Today, we're diving into fetal head, brain, and neck anomalies, covering bony, brain, and neck issues, plus associated facial findings. Our learning objectives include describing normal sonographic assessments and recognizing major abnormalities like skull shapes and intracranial malformations. We use a systematic ultrasound approach, including specific scan planes and a checklist for skull, brain, face, mouth, and neck. When assessing the normal fetal head, we focus on key sonographic measurements like BPD and Head Circumference, and intracranial landmarks.Let's explore abnormal head shapes such as lemon-shaped, strawberry-shaped, and cloverleaf skulls, and discuss microcephaly/macrocephaly.Craniosynostosis involves premature fusion of cranial sutures, leading to abnormal skull growth. We carefully assess for associated abnormalities.Cloverleaf skull configuration is a critical indicator of thanatophoric dysplasia, the most lethal skeletal dysplasia. We emphasize complete fetal surveys.Lemon and strawberry skull patterns are key indicators. Lemon sign suggests Chiari II malformation, while strawberry skull often correlates with trisomy 18.Microcephaly, a small head for gestational age, and macrocephaly, a large head, both require careful evaluation of the brain and overall fetal survey.Anencephaly, acrania, and exencephaly are severe neural tube defects with profound clinical significance, often requiring multidisciplinary care.
