PREFACEThe key features of the series have been designed to ensure better learning, assessment and evaluation. Learning Resources INSIDE THE SERIES Do you Know? This section contains a fact about the topic. Notes This section contains additional information to enrich the subject. Touchpad Information Technology-XI 130 1.13 OPERATING SYSTEM In the early days of computer use, computers were huge machines that were expensive to buy, run, and maintain. The user at that time interacted directly with the hardware through machine language. The software was required to perform basic tasks such as recognising input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as printers and scanners. The search for such software led to the evolution of the modern-day operating system. This software is loaded on top of the memory and performs all the basic tasks. An operating system is a collection of system programs that together control the operation of a computer system. It is the most important part of any computer system. It acts as an intermediary between a user and the computer hardware. The operating system has two major objectives. Firstly, an operating system controls the computer’s hardware. The second objective is to provide an interactive interface to the user and interpret commands so that they can communicate with the hardware. 1.13.1 Need for Operating System Some of the needs for an operating system are as follows: Ð Managing Hardware: The prime objective of the operating system is to manage and control the various hardware resources of a computer system. These hardware resources include the processor, memory, disc space, and so on. It receives the user’s input from the keyboard and then outputs the data to the monitor. The operating system supervises which input device’s data is requested to be processed and which processed data is ready to be displayed on the output device. In addition to communicating with hardware, the operating system provides an error handling procedure and displays an error notification. Ð Providing an Interface: The operating system organises applications so that users can easily access, use, and store them. When an application is opened, the operating system assists the application by providing the major part of the user interface. It provides a stable and consistent way for applications to deal with the hardware without the user having to know all the details of the hardware. If the program is not functioning properly, the operating system again takes control, stops the application, and displays an appropriate error message. Gary Arlen Kiddle is known as the father of OS. Notes Ð OS as a Platform for Application Programs: An operating system is needed as a platform to run application programs that help users perform specific tasks easily. It acts as an interface between the computer and the user, and is designed in such a manner that it operates, controls, and executes various applications on the computer. Ð Managing Input-Output Unit: The operating system also allows the computer to manage its own resources, such as memory, monitor, keyboard, printer, etc. Management of these resources is required for effective utilisation. The operating system controls the various system input-output resources and allocates them to the users or programs as per their requirements. Ð Consistent User Interface: The operating system provides the user with an easy-to-use user interface, so the user doesn’t have to learn a different UI every time and can focus on the content and be productive as quickly as possible. The operating system provides templates and UI components to make the working of a computer really easy for the user. Computer Hardware Operating System Utilities End User Application Program Networking and Internet 177 Do you know? IEEE standard for LAN & MAN is IEEE 802-2002. Characteristics of WAN Some characteristics of WAN are as follows: Ð The speed of data transfer is up to 150 Mbps. Ð It connects large geographical areas at a lesser cost. Ð In WAN, two or more networks are connected through a gateway that establishes connectivity between the protocol used in one network with the other network. Do you know? The First WAN to be designed and developed was private network ARPANET in USA. Difference between LAN, MAN and WAN Some differences between Lan, Man and Wan are given below: BASIS LAN MAN WAN Range The range is from 1 to 10 km. The range is up to 100 km. The range is beyond 100 km. Media used It uses guided media. It uses guided as well as unguided media. It uses unguided media. Speed It has high speed i.e., from 100 kbps.to 1000 kbps. It is optimized for a larger geographical area so, it is slower than LAN. It is meant for long-distance communications, which may or may not be provided by a public pocket network. Therefore, it is much slower in speed. Cost It is cheaper in comparison to others. It is costly compared to LAN & WAN. It is quite expensive. Equipment needed NIC, Switch and Hub. Modem and Router Microwave, Radio, Infra-red laser. Examples School, college and hospital City, Building Internet 2.4.4 VAN (Value Added Network) A value-added network (VAN) is a private, hosted service that provides companies with a secure way to send and share data with their counterparties. Value-added networks were a common way to facilitate electronic data interchange (EDI) between companies. As the Internet created competition for this service with the advent of secure email, VANs responded by expanding their service offerings to include things like message encryption, secure email, and management reporting.
