We are introducing our comprehensive landcover project, which focuses on precisely mapping and categorizing how land is utilized. Our method distinguishes between man-made and natural features, providing a clear classification system crucial for various applications. For instance, man-made categories include buildings, roads, railways, and pavements, while natural categories encompass grass, bare land, forests, and water bodies. This detailed approach ensures that every aspect of land use is meticulously documented. A key part of our project involves the specific drawing rules for each landcover category. For buildings, we always use their precise footprint location, and the building layer is considered a finalized result that requires no further editing. This ensures accuracy and consistency in our mapping. When it comes to roads, our definition includes public roads for vehicles, requiring us to draw the boundary right up to the road curb. This includes areas like emergency parking and bike lanes that are functionally part of the road infrastructure. Furthermore, our drawing rules for roads emphasize using a smooth arc tool for boundaries to ensure fluid and accurate representations. Intersections are carefully handled; roads must be cut at these points and explicitly marked as “road intersection” to reflect the complexity of urban and rural networks. It’s vital that features belonging to the same road are merged to form a complete and continuous shape, avoiding unnecessary cuts that could misrepresent the road network. In rural areas, even dirt roads with clear boundaries and bright surfaces are categorized and drawn as roads, highlighting our commitment to comprehensive mapping. We also define isolation belts in the middle of roads, which are not intended for vehicle driving. These include green belts and raised isolation belts, often marked as "pavement" if they have a raised height. It's important to differentiate these from road markings or high-way isolation walls, which are not considered isolation belts. For railways, we focus on drawing the clear and obvious rail and roadbed, ensuring that the entire structure designed for train passage is accurately captured. This meticulous attention to detail across all categories ensures the integrity and utility of our landcover data.
